Understanding and Treating Hallux Varus: A Success Story at Kossin Care

At Kossin Care, we recently encountered a challenging and enlightening case of a sixty four-year-old gentleman with a progressive deformity of his left great toe. This patient was diagnosed with Hallux Varus, a condition marked by the inward deviation of the big toe.
Interestingly, this patient had a history of a similar issue two decades ago. Back then, he was diagnosed with Hallux Valgus—a condition characterized by the outward deviation of the big toe—for which he underwent corrective surgery. Unfortunately, post-surgery, his toe began to deviate in the opposite direction, leading to Hallux Varus. Over time, this condition not only affected his great toe but also caused varus deformities in his 2nd and 3rd toes and mallet toes in his 3rd and 4th toes. This complex deformity significantly impaired his ability to walk, wear footwear, and caused pain in his legs, knees, and lower back.
After a thorough evaluation, we advised arthrodesis (fusion) of the 1st metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint. The surgical procedure involved fusing the 1st MTP joint with a plate. Remarkably, this intervention automatically corrected the varus deformities of the 2nd and 3rd toes. Additionally, we corrected and fixed the mallet toe of the 4th toe using a K wire.
The patient's postoperative recovery was excellent, and he was very pleased with the results, particularly the straightening of his toe. This case underscores the importance of precise diagnosis and tailored surgical intervention in treating complex foot deformities.
