Total Hip Replacement: When Is It Needed and What Are the Treatment Options?

What Is Total Hip Replacement?

What About Minimally Invasive Hip Replacement?

Activities such as walking, swimming, cycling, and other appropriate low-impact exercises may be suitable for many patients, while high-impact activities may be discouraged depending on the individual situation.
Are There Risks With Hip Replacement?
Like any major surgery, total hip replacement has potential risks. These may include infection, blood clots, dislocation, leg-length differences, fracture, nerve or blood-vessel injury, implant wear or loosening, and persistent pain.
Fortunately, serious complications are uncommon, but individual risk varies depending on overall health and other factors. Your orthopaedic surgeon should discuss the potential benefits and risks before surgery.
When Should You Consult an Orthopaedic Specialist?
If hip pain is affecting your sleep, walking, work, exercise, or routine activities despite appropriate non-surgical treatment, it is worth getting a detailed orthopaedic assessment.
